What Are Solvents in Cosmetics?

Solvents are ingredients that dissolve other substances in a formulation, allowing actives, oils, and extracts to mix evenly into a product. In skincare, they create a uniform texture and make sure key ingredients are delivered effectively to the skin.

Why Are Solvents Important?

• Enable actives to work – dissolve vitamins, antioxidants, and acids so they can be absorbed.

• Improve texture – give serums and creams a smooth, lightweight feel.

• Boost stability – help prevent crystallisation or separation of actives.

• Enhance penetration – some solvents (like DMI) carry ingredients deeper into the skin.
