1. What is PhosphoMax and How Is It Used in Cosmetics?

PhosphoMax (INCI: Phospholipids) is a biomimetic lipid active inspired by the natural building blocks of cell membranes. Phospholipids help support the skin barrier, firmness, and elasticity, making them ideal for pro-aging and restructuring skincare.

In cosmetic formulations, PhosphoMax is used to:

  • Improve the appearance of skin firmness and tone

  • Support a smoother, more refined texture

  • Help reinforce the skin’s protective barrier

  • Enhance the sensorial feel of emulsions and oil serums

It’s suitable for both beginner and advanced formulators looking for an elegant firming / barrier-support active.

2. PhosphoMax Technical Details and Characteristics

  • INCI: Phospholipids

  • Form: Lipid active (viscous, oil-dispersible material)

  • Solubility: Oil-soluble / dispersible in oils and emulsions

  • Typical Usage Rate: 1–3% in leave-on products

  • Recommended pH Range (finished formula): ~4.5–7.5 (when used in emulsions)

  • Key Properties / Functions:

    • Firming and lifting effect (cosmetic)

    • Improved elasticity and skin suppleness

    • Barrier-supporting lipid component

    • Skin-conditioning and smoothing

  • Compatibility:
Pairs well with THDC Vitamin C, Bakuchiol, Niacinamide, Ceramides, Peptides, Ectoine, and antioxidant complexes (Ferulic Acid, Acetyl Zingerone, Vitamin E).

3. How to Incorporate PhosphoMax into Formulations

  • Phase:

    • Add to the oil phase of an emulsion, or

    • Add during cool-down to a pre-formed emulsion (under ~40°C) with good mixing, or

    • Incorporate into anhydrous/oil serums and balms.

  • Heating:

    • Can usually tolerate normal oil-phase heating; however, if possible, keep temperatures as gentle as your system allows (e.g. ≤75°C).

  • Do not add directly to water-only formulas, as it is oil-soluble / lipid-based.

  • Processing Tips for Independent Formulators:

    • Combine with light esters (e.g. Lexfeel Natural, Emogreen) for a non-greasy, silky feel.

    • In W/O or W/O/W systems (e.g. with Natrineo CR8), PhosphoMax can complement the lipid phase and enhance richness.

    • Start at 2% in test formulas and adjust up/down based on feel and performance.

4. Where PhosphoMax Is Found in Skincare Products

You’ll typically see phospholipid-based actives in:

  • Firming & lifting serums

  • Pro-aging moisturisers for loss of elasticity

  • Barrier-repair creams and rich night creams

  • Neck & jawline products

  • Oil serums for mature or stressed skin

Example Applications:

  • Day Lifting Serum (emulsion):
THDC + Niacinamide + PhosphoMax in a light emulsion for improved firmness and brightness.

  • Overnight Repair Cream:
Ceramides + PhosphoMax + Ectoine in a richer cream to support barrier function and elasticity while you sleep.

  • Sculpting Oil Serum:
Fast-absorbing plant oils + PhosphoMax + Bakuchiol for a pro-aging facial oil targeting visible firmness and smoothness.
