INCI Name: Acrylates/C10-30 Alkyl Acrylate Crosspolymer. It is sold as a lightweight white powder.
Solubility: Dispersible in water. It swells and thickens after neutralisation and is not oil-soluble.
Usage rate: typically 0.2–1.0%, with 0.4% shown as a recommended dosage on the supplier technical information
pH stability: effective over a broad pH range of 4 to 9.
Key functions: emulsifier, rheology modifier, thickener and suspension aid for oil-in-water systems. It is also described as HLB independent, quick-dispersing, and suitable for water-resistant oil-in-water emulsions.
Compatibility and formulation strengths: Pemulen™ EZ-4U is designed to stabilise more sophisticated formulations, including those containing challenging oils and various cosmetic performance ingredients. It also offers good electrolyte tolerance and is positioned as easier to neutralise than conventional carbomer-style systems.
How to Incorporate Pemulen™ EZ-4U Polymer into Formulations
Disperse Pemulen™ EZ-4U Polymer into the water phase under moderate agitation. Once fully dispersed, neutralise with a suitable base such as TEA or NaOH to develop viscosity, then incorporate or emulsify the oil phase. The ingredient is described as cold-process friendly, although it can also be used in hot-process systems.
For best results, avoid excessive shear before neutralisation, as this can interfere with proper viscosity build. Because the polymer thickens after neutralisation, it is important to plan the order of addition carefully and check the final pH of your formula.
Pemulen™ EZ-4U is a good fit when you want to create smooth, stable emulsions without relying on traditional emulsifier systems. It is particularly helpful for formulators developing elegant moisturisers, fluid creams or gel-cream textures with a fresh after-feel.
